9.9 Sale Singapore: How It Works and How to Prepare

Short answer

9.9 is one of Singapore's double-digit online sales, held each 9 September on Shopee and Lazada. It is smaller than 11.11 but works the same way, so check an item against its usual price before buying.

Every September, “9.9” opens Singapore’s online sale season. It is the first of the year’s big “double-digit” campaigns, and while it is usually smaller than November’s 11.11, it works in exactly the same way. This guide explains what 9.9 is, how its savings actually stack, where it has an edge, and how to prepare so the deal you grab is genuinely low — not just loudly advertised.

What 9.9 actually is

9.9 lands on 9 September each year, taking its name from the date “9/9”. Like the other double-digit dates, it was popularised by the big marketplaces: in Singapore, Shopee runs its “9.9 Super Shopping Day” and Lazada its “9.9 Mega Sale”, typically with pre-sale days in early September and promotions that run on for a week or two around the 9th.

It is one of four recurring double-digit sales — 9.9, 10.10, 11.11 and 12.12 — spread across the final third of the year. Of these, 11.11 (Singles’ Day) is generally the flagship, but the mechanics, voucher types and the need to check prices are identical across all of them.

How the savings really work

The headline percentage on a product is only part of the story. On 9.9, as on every double-digit sale, most of the real saving comes from things you have to claim or apply yourself:

  • Platform vouchers — store-wide or category vouchers claimed before checkout, usually with a minimum spend and a cap.
  • Free-shipping vouchers — often the difference between a genuine deal and a mediocre one once delivery is counted.
  • Coins / cashback — small balances you earn and redeem, worth collecting but rarely decisive alone.
  • Flash sales and brand-store drops — time-limited offers that often hold the best genuine prices if the item was already keenly priced.

Because these can usually be combined, two identical carts can total very different amounts depending on which vouchers you remembered to claim — though stacking rules, caps and minimum spends vary by platform, year and category. Claim the vouchers first, then shop.

Where 9.9 has an edge

9.9 is not the biggest sale, but it has two practical advantages worth planning around:

What each double-digit sale is best for: 9.9 (September) New-season launches, stock; 10.10 (October) Mid-season top-ups; 11.11 (November) Biggest discounts, vouchers; 12.12 (December) Year-end and gifting

When each double-digit sale tends to help most. Varies by platform, seller and category.

  • Deeper stock. Fewer shoppers pile in than at 11.11, so popular sizes and models are less likely to sell out. If an item you want tends to vanish in November, buying it at 9.9 can be the safer move.
  • New-season launches. September brings new-season fashion and fresh product ranges, so 9.9 is a good window for recently released items rather than end-of-line clearance.

The trade-off is that the deepest discounts and the largest voucher pools usually appear later in the year. So 9.9 suits buying for availability and newness; 11.11 and 12.12 suit chasing the lowest headline price.

How to tell a real deal from a dressed-up one

A big strike-through price is persuasive, but it only means something if the “usual price” is genuine. Singapore’s Competition and Consumer Commission (CCCS) price-transparency guidelines say a “usual” or “before” price used in a comparison should be a bona fide previous price — not one that was never really charged, or charged only briefly just before the “sale”.

A few quick checks:

  1. Know the usual price before the hype. Note what the item normally costs a week or two earlier.
  2. Ignore the countdown pressure. A genuinely good price is still good in five minutes.
  3. Compare the same item across Shopee and Lazada, including shipping and vouchers.
  4. Watch for inflated “before” prices. If the strike-through jumped up just before 9.9, be sceptical.

Don’t forget GST on overseas buys

9.9 pulls in a lot of cross-border listings, so an overseas “deal” needs the tax added before you compare it like-for-like.

How to prepare for the next 9.9

Because 9.9 recurs every September, the best preparation starts well before the date:

  • Build a shortlist of items you actually want, with each one’s everyday price noted down.
  • Pre-claim vouchers in the days before, when platforms release them early.
  • Decide your ceiling price per item in advance so a countdown timer cannot push you past it.
  • Compare across platforms on the day, adding shipping and any GST before judging.

The bottom line

9.9 is a real opportunity, especially for new-season items and anything that risks selling out later in the year. Treat the banners as a starting point, not proof: decide what you want in advance, know its usual price, claim your vouchers, and compare before you commit. If 9.9 does not deliver, 11.11 and 12.12 follow within months, and Black Friday sits in between. To see which marketplace tends to suit your category, read Shopee vs Lazada: where are deals better.
