Chinese New Year Shopping in Singapore: Deals Done Right
Chinese New Year shopping in Singapore peaks in the weeks before the festival, whose date shifts each year across late January or February. Shopee and Lazada run CNY campaigns, but festive demand can push some prices up, so check against usual prices.
Chinese New Year brings one of the busiest shopping stretches of the Singapore year — new clothes, home refreshes, hampers, snacks and gifts, much of it bought online in the weeks beforehand. Shopee and Lazada run CNY campaigns alongside it, so there are genuine deals. But festive demand also works against you on some items, so this guide covers where the savings really are, what tends to go up in price, and how to order so everything arrives in time.
When CNY shopping happens
Chinese New Year falls on the first day of the lunar calendar, so its date shifts each year — usually somewhere in late January or February. The shopping, though, builds over the two to three weeks before, as households stock up on festive food, buy new outfits, clean and decorate the home, and prepare gifts and red packets. Online, that means the heaviest buying and the platform CNY promotions land in the run-up, not on the holiday itself.
Because the date moves, CNY shopping often overlaps with the tail of the year-end sales — so if you planned around 12.12, you may already have a recent price benchmark for electronics and gifting categories.
Where the savings actually come from
As with every marketplace campaign, the headline percentage is only part of the picture. The real saving usually comes from things you claim or apply yourself:
- Platform vouchers — store-wide or category vouchers claimed before checkout, with a minimum spend and a cap.
- Free-shipping vouchers — often the difference between a real deal and a mediocre one once delivery is added.
- Coins / cashback — small balances worth collecting but rarely decisive on their own.
- Brand-store and flash deals — where the best genuine prices tend to sit for CNY categories like beauty, home appliances and electronics.
Claim the vouchers first, then shop — two identical carts can total very differently depending on what you applied. Stacking rules, caps and minimum spends vary by platform, year and category.
Watch out: festive demand pushes some prices up
CNY is unusual among shopping seasons because demand lifts the price of the most festive items rather than lowering it. Seasonal snacks and goodies, hampers, auspicious decor, flowers and new-year outfits often cost more in the weeks before the festival, simply because everyone wants them at once.

How CNY categories tend to behave. Not a guarantee — always check the item’s usual price.
That is the opposite of a markdown. The defence is the same discipline as any sale: know the usual price first.
How to tell a real deal from a dressed-up one
A big strike-through price only means something if the “usual price” is genuine. Singapore’s Competition and Consumer Commission (CCCS) price-transparency guidelines say a “usual” or “before” price used in a comparison should be a bona fide previous price — not one inflated just before a promotion.
A few quick checks:
- Know the everyday price of each item a few weeks earlier.
- Ignore countdown pressure. A genuinely good price survives a five-minute pause.
- Compare the same item across Shopee and Lazada, including shipping and vouchers.
- Be sceptical of a “before” price that jumped up just before the campaign.

Order early so it arrives in time
The practical trap at CNY is logistics, not price. In the final days before the holiday, courier volumes surge, delivery slows, and some sellers pause shipping or close for the break. Anything you need before the festival — outfits, hampers, gifts, reunion-dinner extras — should be ordered with a comfortable buffer.
The bottom line
CNY shopping rewards planning more than speed. The real deals are usually on everyday categories running promotions during the season, while the festive items themselves often cost more — so know the usual price, claim your vouchers, and order early enough to beat the holiday delivery crunch.
