Shopee vs Amazon.sg: Where Are Deals Better?
Neither wins outright. Shopee's vouchers, coins and seller volume suit frequent small buys; Amazon.sg's Prime, international catalogue and set shipping fees suit branded or imported items. Compare the same product, with vouchers, delivery and GST, on both.

“Shopee or Amazon.sg — which has the better deals?” is really two different shopping models dressed as one question. Shopee is a sprawling marketplace of independent sellers that runs on vouchers, coins and sale-day spikes. Amazon.sg is closer to a retailer with an international catalogue, where the deal engine is a paid Prime membership and access to overseas stores. The better price swings by item, so the honest answer is to compare the exact product on both — but knowing how each one actually discounts makes that comparison fast.
The short verdict: no fixed winner
Neither platform is reliably cheaper. For everyday small buys — phone cases, household refills, cheap fashion — Shopee’s free vouchers and huge seller pool usually win on headline price. For branded electronics, books, and items you want shipped in from the US or Japan, Amazon.sg’s catalogue and Prime delivery often win on the delivered price and on certainty. Pick the model that matches what you are buying, then still check the final number on both.

Shopee: vouchers, coins and marketplace scale
Shopee’s strength is the sheer volume of discount mechanics, and they cost you nothing to collect. There are three main voucher types — platform vouchers (Shopee’s own), free-shipping vouchers, and seller vouchers — and you can stack one of each type on a single order, but never more than one of each. The best-value order therefore combines a platform voucher, a free-shipping voucher and a seller voucher at once.
Two limits keep this realistic. A free-shipping voucher is capped at a S$1.99 discount per shop, so it trims delivery rather than transforming a price. Shopee Coins are reward points — worth 100 Coins to S$1 — that can only be spent inside Shopee, not withdrawn as cash. None of this requires a paid membership, which is Shopee’s real edge for frequent, low-value shopping: collect vouchers, stack them, and small buys get genuinely cheap.
The flip side of marketplace scale is variability. Quality, warranty and seller reliability differ listing by listing, and a strike-through “usual price” is only as honest as the seller makes it — which is where knowing the baseline matters (see how to spot fake discounts).
Amazon.sg: Prime, international catalogue and delivery thresholds
Amazon.sg’s discount engine is structured differently. The headline perks — Prime Exclusive Deals and 30-minute early access to Lightning Deals — sit behind Amazon Prime, which costs S$4.99 a month or S$49.90 a year. Prime also makes delivery cheaper: One-Day (Priority) Delivery is free with Prime but S$1.49 without, same-day delivery is free on orders over S$59 with Prime (S$9.99 without), and eligible International Store items ship with free International Standard Delivery for members.

You do not have to pay for Prime to shop, though. Standard Delivery is free for non-Prime orders above S$60, arriving in about 2–3 business days domestically; and non-Prime shoppers can unlock free international-store shipping by building a S$60 cart of items from Amazon Japan or Amazon US. Below those thresholds, a delivery fee applies — which is exactly the number that decides whether a single-item Amazon buy beats a Shopee seller.
Amazon’s advantage is catalogue and consistency: official retail listings, a large imported range, and predictable fulfilment. If you want a specific branded model or something not sold locally, it is often the easier — and sometimes cheaper, once shipping is counted — route.
The price you actually pay: GST and delivery
The headline price is not the number that leaves your account. Two costs decide the real comparison.
Delivery. On Shopee, a free-shipping voucher saves at most S$1.99 per shop; beyond that you pay the seller’s rate. On Amazon.sg, delivery is free above the thresholds above and otherwise a fixed fee. For a single cheap item, Shopee’s seller shipping or Amazon’s sub-threshold fee can quietly wipe out a “better” headline price.
GST. For imported low-value goods — each item valued at S$400 or less, arriving by air or post from a GST-registered seller — 9% GST is charged at the point of purchase and shown in a GST-inclusive checkout price. IRAS’s own example: a S$240 headset bought through a GST-registered overseas marketplace has the GST collected at purchase. Both Shopee and Amazon.sg operate as GST-registered marketplaces, so the tax is already in the price — do not add another 9% yourself, or you will mis-judge the comparison.
This is the CCCS drip-pricing principle in your own hands: compare the delivered, tax-paid total, not the big number on the listing. Under the CCCS Guidelines on Price Transparency, mandatory charges should already be in the headline price and any discount must have a genuine, valid basis — but the safe habit is still to read the final checkout figure on each app.
Buyer protection and returns
Safety is not the tie-breaker here: the Ministry of Home Affairs Transaction Safety Ratings award Amazon B2C, Lazada B2C and Shopee (B2C and C2C) the top four-tick rating, meaning each has implemented every assessed anti-scam feature — seller verification, secure payment, monitoring, record-keeping and dispute resolution.
The mechanics of getting your money back differ. Shopee holds payment under Shopee Guarantee until you confirm receipt or the guarantee period lapses, and lets you raise a Return/Refund within 15 days of the order being marked Delivered for a defective, wrong, counterfeit or damaged item; Shopee’s decision on a request is final. Amazon.sg handles returns through its Returns and Refunds centre on your order, with eligibility shown per item. For either, the protection only applies to transactions completed on the platform — a seller who pushes you to pay off-app removes every safeguard, and that is a classic scam move (see how to avoid online shopping scams).
Which to pick for what
- Frequent small buys (fashion, home, accessories): Shopee. Free stackable vouchers and seller volume usually win, and no membership is needed.
- Branded electronics or a specific imported model: Amazon.sg. The catalogue and predictable fulfilment often win on the delivered price, especially with Prime one-day delivery.
- One-off purchase, no membership: compare both non-Prime — Amazon’s S$60 free-shipping threshold versus a Shopee seller plus a S$1.99 shipping voucher.
- You shop online weekly: Amazon Prime at S$49.90/year can pay for itself in delivery and exclusive deals; a heavy Shopee user gets similar value free through vouchers and coins.
Who should not default to Amazon.sg: occasional buyers of cheap local items — paying for Prime, or padding a cart to S$60, can cost more than a Shopee seller with a shipping voucher. Who should not default to Shopee: anyone buying a pricey branded item where an official retail listing and predictable returns matter more than shaving a few dollars.
How to compare the real price
- Find the identical item — same model, capacity, colour — on both platforms.
- Apply every discount: platform, free-shipping and seller vouchers on Shopee; Prime deals or the S$60 free-shipping threshold on Amazon.sg.
- Add delivery. Remember Shopee’s shipping voucher caps at S$1.99 per shop and Amazon charges below its thresholds.
- Confirm GST is already included for imported low-value goods, and don’t double-count it.
- Check the seller and returns — reputable seller, and the return window that fits a pricey item.

Common questions
Do I need Prime to get deals on Amazon.sg? No. Prime unlocks exclusive deals and cheaper delivery, but you can shop and hit the S$60 free standard-delivery threshold without it.
Are Shopee Coins the same as cash? No — 100 Coins equal S$1, they can’t be withdrawn, and they only work inside Shopee. Treat them as a discount on a future order.
Which is safer? Both carry the top MHA four-tick safety rating. Safety comes from staying on-platform and using secure payment, not from the brand name.
Do I pay GST twice on an imported item? No. For air/post items of S$400 or less from a GST-registered seller, the 9% is charged at checkout and shown in the price — nothing more is collected at the border.
The bottom line
Don’t pick a platform — pick a price. Shopee rewards frequent, voucher-savvy small buys; Amazon.sg rewards branded and imported purchases with Prime delivery and a consistent catalogue. Compare the same item with vouchers, delivery and GST included, keep the transaction on the platform, and buy wherever the genuine delivered total is lowest.
